ANC confident ahead of Tlokwe by-elections

The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West says it’s more than ready to contest the by-elections in the Tlokwe Local Municipality in Potchefstroom later this month.

The party has registered candidates in each of the seven municipal wards to be contested on the 24th.

ANC Provincial Secretary, Dakota Legoete, says following the registration of the candidates, they will now intensify their election campaign.

“We have already started with our campaign. We are now going to intensify our campaign as the ANC…we are going to ensure we pull up all the stops and ensure the victory of the ANC in the forth-coming elections. It has everything to do with our reputation because it is very clear that those who can’t succeed out of a popular vote normally run to the courts and they are manipulating and abusing the court system in this country.”

The DA’s Theuns Kruger and spokesperson for the Independent candidates, David Kham, say they are optimistic about winning some of the wards.

“We are very optimistic that we are going to secure wards. The high moral ground is necessitating the question of winning and we don’t see any hiccup. We are happy that our people are alive,” says Kham.

Meanwhile, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the North West says all those intending to contest the by-elections in Tlokwe, have successfully met the deadline for submissions to register their potential candidates.

Both the ANC and DA will be contesting all seven wards.

Seven independent candidates will be contesting in six wards, however, they will not contest ward 13.

The highly-contested ward 18, will see two independent candidates, the ANC and DA battle it out.
