The African National Congress (ANC) is confident that it will retain control of all metropolitan municipalities it currently governs. This is despite recent surveys by several research groups which show that the ruling party might lose the Nelson Mandela Bay, City of Johannesburg and Tshwane metros. However, party Secretary General Gwede Mantashe, insists that they have done well in servicing communities and that they will be fighting to win Cape Town back.
He says, “In many municipalities, financial management has been stabilised. Many more of our people have access to quality, reliable and sustainable basic levels of service. Housing delivery has been accelerated and there is a decrease in the number of public protests. National and provincial government have intervened decisively where necessary to ensure that weak or dysfunctional municipalities are capacitated and if in the interest of better governance, political leadership has been changed.”
