ANC confident it will retain Nelson Mandela Metro

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape remains confident that it will retain the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in the province.

The Provincial Working Committee has met in Port Elizabeth to craft a battle plan for the municipal elections.

The party says it will sort out all the political challenges facing the party in the metro.

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is one of the highly contested municipalities eyed by opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and United Democratic Movement(UDM) during the forthcoming local government elections.

However, challenges still remain and the ANC’s Mlibo Qoboshiyane admits that the elections are going to be a tough battle.

“We want to be above 80 %. We are quite sure that the 44 municipalities that we are in charge of in the province out of 45, we want to be in charge of all of them including the two metros that we have. All signs are that it’s going to be a tough election but we are certain of victory”.

The party says it’s working on aligning its branch structures with the new ward demarcations in preparation for the municipal elections.

Meanwhile, the ANC in the Free State is already predicting victory in Wednesday’s by-elections in Ward one, at Heilbron.

The party has been interacting with its branches and the community during its campaign.

The ward was left vacant by its late councillor Sisi Bosiu. ANC provincial spokesperson, Thabo Meeko says their campaign is also to reinforce its work before local government elections.
