Mashaba’s business background gave him the edge: Maimane

DA leader Mmusi Maimane believes Herman Mashaba came out tops as the party’s Johannesburg Mayoral candidate for the 2016 local government elections because he managed to convince the panel on how he would deal with the city’s economic challenges.

Mashaba of Black Like Me fame was announced as the candidate in Newtown earlier on Saturday.

He was competing with Wits Professor and DA Councillor Rabelani Dagada.

Maimane says Mashaba’s business background gave him the edge.

“The questions that was perhaps before us, is how do we deal with the economy of the city of Johannesburg? And I think, if I have to reduce it to my one vote in the panel. That was perhaps in part, part of the key distinguishers. And ntate Mashaba emerged as the candidate because out of the deliberations, I thought the question about the economy, the question about how do we put systems in place came out strongly and he won the vote in that regard,” says Maimane.

He says inequality cannot be addressed under the current economic environment.

Earlier, Mashaba says if given the chance he will do away with Black Economic Empowerment. He says he is against laws and policies that classify him as a black South African.

The Black Like Me founder was addressing a news conference after DA leader Mmusi Maimane announced his candidacy.

Mashaba says one can only take care of the majority in a functioning economy and not one which is growing at about one percent with unemployment at 35 percent.

He says inequality cannot be addressed under the current economic environment.
