IEC ready to announce results

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Chairperson Glen Mashinini says they are ready to officially announce the final results of the 2016 local government elections on Saturday evening.

He was speaking at the IEC Results Operations Centre in Pretoria.

Mashinini has commended the media for what he terms their comprehensive coverage of the elections.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank the members of the media for the role that they have played throughout the time, in ensuring that the country and the world is informed about this beautiful phenomenon of South Africa’s democracy.”

The IEC is expected to announce final election results at 6pm this evening. The IEC emphasised that remaining results are still outstanding from the big metros such as Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.

With 99% of the national votes counted, the African National Congress has 52% and the Democratic Alliance stands at 27%. The Economic Freedom Fighters has thus far obtained 8% nationally.

Mashinini says, “We’ll be preparing this venue for the official results or final results announcement event to be held here at 6pm. The results have not yet been finalised by the commission. We still have to process in terms of the Section 55 of the municipal electoral act. Parties and candidates have until 5pm on the second day after voting to lodge any objections which are material to the results.”

He says results in some regions could change pending investigations into alleged irregularities.

“We may in certain instances nullify some of the results and therefore what party agents may have given you at the local level could still change depending on what we regard as irregularities that may have happened at voting stations. But there is nothing wrong with using the information on the lead board because this lead is board is a platform that we are using for transparency so you can understand and see the results of the election.”
