Four people have died during voting: IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) Chief Executive Officer, Mosotho Moepya, says four people are known to have died during voting on Wednesday.

Moepya says that the voters’ deaths are a result of natural causes.

“The electoral commission is saddened to report the deaths at or in the vicinity of voting stations of two more voters in two separate incidents. These occurred in Ingwe municipality in KwaZulu-Natal and Struisbaai in the Western Cape. In both incidents it would appear that the deaths were from natural causes.”

Meanwhile, two people are recovering in hospital after the tent where they were casting their votes in Durban collapsed on Wednesday, injuring them.

Advanced Life Support Paramedic Spokesperson, Ceron Lennox says, “Two people were injured on that scene and were then transported to hospital, their injuries were minor injuries but they still need care.”

“There was a heavy wind but I’m not sure if it was caused by the wind or if there was any other factors that caused it to collapse.”
