No voting for some Marikana residents

Scores of people will not be able to cast their votes in Marikana in the North West on Wednesday as they are registered elsewhere in the country.

Most of the affected people are migrant labourers and job-seekers who have flocked to the platinum rich area.

Unlike with the national elections, where a registered voter can cast their vote on the national ballot if they are outside their province, the dynamics are different with local elections.

Groups of people are wandering the dusty streets of Nkaneng, Mmaditlhokwa and Marikana as they could not travel to the voting districts they registered in.

This may be the explanation for the fact that out of the over 600 000 people residing in Rustenburg, only 297 000 are registered to vote.

Many are not permanents of Rustenburg.
