KZN IEC dismisses a number of officials

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has dismissed the entire Ward 94 electoral staff at KwaMakhutha in the Ethekwini Municipality after irregularities were discovered in special votes.

The staff in a ward in Dundee in northern KwaZulu-Natal include the presiding officer and his deputy.

They have also been removed for a similar offence.

The IEC officials say staff did not place the ballots correctly in envelopes in both incidents.

A new IEC team is expected to be deployed to the area.

Meanwhile,  ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize has voted at the Thandokuhle voting station outside Pietermatzburg.

Mkhize who was accompanied by the Moses Mabhida region chairperson Mthandeni Dlungwane along with his wife Dr May Mkhize, who were among the early voters.

Mkhize says he is happy that people are flocking to the voting station in their numbers.

Voting stations opened at 7am and will close at 7pm Wednesday evening.
