Marikana voters hope for community development

In Marikana in the North West, long queues are evident in some voting stations. The area is part of the Rustenburg Municipality which is a highly-contested constituency in the province.

Scores of people say they have been queuing since two o’clock Wednesday morning.

Over 100 people are queuing at ward 31 in Marikana.

People who spoke to the SABC say it is important for them to vote as they hope this will bring development in their community.

Marikana has been in the news since 2012 when there was a cry for better living and working conditions.

Those living here say development is yet to come but that has not deterred them from showing up at the voting station.

Meanwhile below SABC reporter Mnqoba Mchunu gives an update on how voting is progressing in Gauteng.

In the Eastern Cape bad weather conditions have destroyed some voting stations and temporary structures have had to be put up.
