IEC warns voters against taking selfies of ballot papers

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says voters taking selfies of their ballot papers will be charged.

Voting stations opened at 7am on Wednesday morning and will close at 7pm. No political canvassing will be allowed near or at polling stations.

Speaking on AM Live, IEC Chief Electoral Officer, Mosotho Moepya says, “Taking a selfie of the ballot paper is forbidden, it problematic because it introduces an element into elections that renders the election not so secret.”

“What we are encouraging is people who may have the temptation to use photographic equipment to rather take a picture of their fingers.”
