Sol Plaatjie and Dikgatlhong Municipalities have the highest number of special vote applications standing at 9 000 collectively.
More than 800 000 eligible voters have applied for special votes country wide.
IEC Provincial Elections Manager Elkin Topkin says the increase in special vote applications was sparked by online voting stations and home visit applications.
He says: “Technology just made it easier for our voters to apply so we encouraged it. Its something that the IEC really looks forward to in terms of processing it in terms of day one and day two and making sure that the queues on day three are not that long.”
He says they hope to process all the special votes over the next two days.
