IEC Communications Officer, Kate Bapela, says the commission is more than ready for the elections.

Speaking to the SABC Digital News at the IEC Results Operations Centre in Pretoria, Bapela  says, “We’ve had plenty of time to prepare and I can say that we are more than ready to deal with any challenges that may come. We are ready to service the media houses that will be stationed at the centre until after the elections on Wednesday.”

The commission launched the Results Operations Centre last Wednesday which is going to be the focal point for monitoring the elections results from the moment counting commences late on Wednesday.

Different media houses have deployed their teams at the centre. The SABC’s TV, Radio, Digital as well as Research teams are also at the centre already, ready to give South Africans first-hand information before and the after the August 3rd Local Government Elections.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer, Mosotho Moepya, has also reiterated Bapela’s statement, saying despite having been faced with their biggest challenges ever in preparations for these elections, the commission is ready.

Moepya says, “In many aspects we are actually better prepared than we have ever been for an election because we have had a couple of extra months since the Constitutional window to hold these elections opened on 18 May 2016.”

The IEC says all election materials are ready to be distributed to municipalities this coming week for the much-anticipated elections on Wednesday.
