Vuwani residents remain defiant

The pro-Makhado Demarcation Task Team in Vuwani in Limpopo says it will continue with the boycott of services, despite an agreement signed between Vuwani traditional leaders and government on Thursday.

Under the agreement, the government will start the process of re-determining the new municipality that will be established in Vhembe’s boundaries two weeks after next week’s local government elections.

A three-month protest by residents opposed to their inclusion in the municipality has seen violent protests and a service shutdown.

The forum’s spokesperson, Nsobo Sambo, says they are not part of the agreement.

“It’s not binding to us as the pro-Makhado people. For the past two days until tomorrow, the shutdown will be suspended and the services are running smoothly.”

“And then later tomorrow, the shutdown will continue. So nothing has changed for us. The agreement will be effected after the third of August.”
