Calm returns to Midvaal informal settlement after violent protests

Calm has returned to the Sicelo Informal Settlement in the Midvaal, south of Johannesburg, Gauteng’s only Democratic Alliance (DA)-run municipality, following two days of violent protests.

Residents burned rubble and bucket toilets and barricaded the R59‚ forcing a closure between the Meyerton and Johan le Roux off-ramps.

They are demanding houses‚ water and electricity‚ and insist on being addressed by Mayor Bongani Baloyi.

The R59 is open to traffic on Friday morning.

Police spokesperson Tsekiso Mofokeng says, “We have deployed our members to the scene, they are on the R59 to patrol the area. The situation at this time is calm, but we will remain in the area up until everything is back to normal.”

“We haven’t made any arrests, but we’re still patrolling the area to calm the situation and further investigations will continue,” adds Mofokeng.
