Preparations for LGE 2016 on track: Van Rooyen

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Des Van Rooyen says preparations for the 2016 Local Government Elections (LGE 2016) are on track.

He says: “Today, we have been checking on the state of readiness from A to Z and we felt that we have covered all the areas for us to easily conclude that the country is ready to deliver on its democratic mandate.”

According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) there are more than 200 parties with 61 014 candidates contesting these elections.

Van Rooyen says: “We have realized an increase in the number of voting districts since the last elections in 2011. The number then stood at 22 253. In the 2016 elections, the number of voting stations currently stands at 22 612. From a logistic point of view, we have learnt that the IEC has employed over 22 000 staff members to handle the election process in all 9 provinces.”
