Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba says he will soon be announcing a plan to roll out a programme aimed at ensuring that eligible voters who have not collected their identity documents are able to cast their votes in August local elections.
Gigaba says more than 208 000 IDs are lying uncollected at Home Affairs offices.
The Minister says the plan includes the extension of hours on Election Day.
“For the purposes of the election we need to assist the IEC to conduct the election to ensure that as many registered people as possible come forward to vote.”
Gigaba says, “The department is going to announce a programme for the facilitation of IDs. It will include the extension of certain hours on certain days, and ensure that on the election day, the 3rd of August itself our offices are open until the voting stations are closed. So that those who want to collect their IDs can first come and rush-off and cast their votes.”
