IEC hopes for calm during elections

Gauteng IEC Officer Masego Sheburi says the IEC is hopeful that the upcoming local government elections will take place in a calm atmosphere.

Speaking on Morning Live he says: “We have enlisted the help of the SAPS to make sure that truly free and fair elections take place.”

Gauteng is the biggest voting block with 6.2 million registered voters.

It has three metropolitan areas, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and the City of Johannesburg.

These metros seem to be hotly contested in the 2016’s local government elections.

What has been been more interesting is the high number of youth registered for the elections says Sheburi.

He says: “We are gradually moving into an era where the majority of voters on the voters are no longer old.”

He says it is encouraging to see more young people getting involved in politics.
