The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has condemned the violent protests that have taken place in the country ahead of the municipal elections in August. IEC Chairperson, Glen Mashinini, says the elections cannot be proclaimed free and fair while conditions in the run-up to them are not conducive.
Mashinini was addressing the media at the signing of the Electoral Code of Conduct in Johannesburg.
Glen Mashinini has warned political parties contesting the elections that acts of violence will not be tolerated. He says those parties found infringing the electoral code of conduct will be disqualified.
Several incidents have been reported in Gauteng where political parties were intimidated during their campaigning. Mashinini has appealed to political leaders to tell their members not to resort to acts of violence when campaigning.
