IEC ready for August elections

The Independent Electoral Commission says it’s ready for the August 3rd local government elections but has raised serious concerns about violence linked to political intolerance.

The Pan Africa Movement will appear first on the ballot papers of the polls.

All other parties will follow in alphabetical order. More than 200 parties will contest in local districts countrywide.

The IEC’s vice chairperson Terry Tselane says there’s a 69% increase in parties and independents contesting the elections compared to the 2011 elections.

Tselane says: “We are capturing and validating the various candidate nominations received by the deadline on Friday. But early indications are that approximately 970 independent candidates will be contesting this year’s municipal elections.”

“It is possible that by the time we complete, around a 1 000 independent candidates will be contesting,” adds Tselane.
