No major administrative hiccups as IEC prepares for elections

No major administrative or technical hiccups have been experienced so far as the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) winds up the registration of candidates for the August municipal polls.

The deadline for the submission of candidate nominations for all political parties and aspiring independent candidates closes at 5 pm on Thursday.

The IEC says nominations may be submitted by hand at local IEC offices in the municipality where candidates will be contesting the elections. For the first time, nominations may also be submitted online.

The IEC says this option has proved popular, with 37 political parties having registered to use the system.

More than 53 000 candidates contested the 2011 Municipal Elections; including 754 independent candidates.

Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane says they have managed to beat today’s deadline for registration of candidates.

“We are in a drive to make sure that the best candidates are available. It’s the largest pool of candidates that we have put together in every ward. We’ve chosen the best and drawn from all communities.”
