Rustenburg Mayor Mpho Khunon of the African National Congress (ANC) will continue with a second term in the North West Province city after the ANC succeeded in having its candidate re-elected.
The ANC has retained the mayorship with a vote of 46 to 43 in the council.
Sheila Mabale Huma, also of the ANC, was earlier elected the new Speaker in the city.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) which has been a strong supporter of the Marikana miners had said it would try to ensure that the ANC lost control of the council.
Rocky Malebana Metsing and Pogisho Bothomane have been sworn in as councillors in the Rustenburg Local Municipality. This, though the IEC confirmed that the duo have been removed from the councillor candidate lists.
Both the ANC and the Forum for Service Delivery, backed by the EFF and the DA were eyeing the mayoral and speaker positions. The ANC needed two votes, while the three needed three votes.
The UDM, Freedom Front Plus, AIC and Botho Community Movement have one seat each.
