The African National Congress (ANC) Treasurer General Zweli Mkhize says recalling President Jacob Zuma before the crucial local government elections earlier this month, would have been disastrous for the ruling party.
He says removing President Zuma would have resulted in even more voters not voting for the ANC.
SABC Radio News caught up with Mkhize in East London in the Eastern Cape attending a dialogue of young professionals.
He says they analysed the public outcry to remove President Zuma.
“We did talk about the issue of the call that came in long before the elections, and we felt that at the end of the day, on the balance of probabilities it is a lot more useful for the president not to step down.”
“We believed that it would create a lot more stability going forward. We understand there would be certain losses but we are then saying there are lots of things that we have to correct as the ANC, that’s why as the leadership we are saying we take collective responsibility.”
