ANC must develop firm position on foreign policy matters: Mbeki

Former President Thabo Mbeki says the ANC needs to develop positions on the ever-evolving global environment, particularly for matters where it doesn’t adopt the African Union stance.

This comes as the ANC’s sub-committee on International Relations hosts a two-day retreat to deliberate on key international developments and the party’s stance within the global environment.

Mbeki says he is confident that the subcommittee will ensure the party’s positions are consistent with the historic, political and ideological ideals of the ANC.

“There are many changes that are happening in the world. You hear for instance the formation of BRICS. You have the issue that President Ramaphosa next year is going to be hosting the G20 summit. You’ve got the conflict in the Middle East. You’ve got the conflict in Ukraine. A lot of discussion about multi-literalism away from unilateralism. Where does the ANC position itself with regard to all of those?”

“So I am saying there are established positions like on the matter of the reform of the security council of the AU positions and the South African government has adopted those positions also,” he said.
