Court to deliver verdict in KZN IEC official’s case

The Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal will today deliver judgment on two applications in the trial of an Electoral Commission (IEC) official.

Musawenkosi Mnikathi is charged with transporting voting materials in the May 29 general elections without a police escort.

The two applications have delayed the trial.

In one of the applications, the commission’s accused manager argued that the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party supporters should be barred from wearing party regalia in court saying it was intimidating.

The MK Party’s John Hlophe says, “I’ve never seen a single political party where the supporters do not go to court or the precinct of the court wearing their official regalia. So if there is indeed a ruling to that effect it will be for the first time. And we will take that as offence, as an affront to uMkhonto we Sizwe.”
