City of Joburg Community Development MMC and former Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has been fired with immediate effect.
Gwamanda has been released from all his executive duties by executive Mayor Dada Morero after being on special leave.
This follows his alleged involvement in a fraudulent funeral policy scheme. Gwamanda was granted bail in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on a fraud charge last month.
In a statement, Morero says Gwamanda’s immediate release aims to ensure that the city’s service delivery remains uninterrupted. Gwamanda was placed on special leave three weeks ago.
Some political parties and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Gauteng have been calling for his dismissal.
Morero has appointed Tebogo Nkonkou as Gwamanda’s replacement.
