Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is expected to announce his provincial cabinet today.
African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula says that it is regrettable that both the ANC and DA could not reach an agreement over the allocation of portfolios in the Gauteng Legislature.
“The Premier of Gauteng, comrade Panyaza Lesufi intends to conclude all negotiations and consultations and to announce the appointment of the members of the Executive Council today, Wednesday, 3rd July 2024. The DA were advised that if they are not to be part of the GPU, the deadline was 14 hours today, Wednesday, 3rd July 2024”
Mbalula made the comments today at a press briefing at Luthuli House.
The current deadlock between both parties comes as the DA has proposed to the ANC that it should receive four MEC portfolios while the ANC is offering three.
Mbalula says that the ANC is unfortunately unable to give into the DA’s demand.
“We are unable to accede to the DA’s latest proposals as we have indicated throughout all negotiations. The DA is not the only party we are negotiating with in the setting up of the government of provincial unity.”
Meanwhile, the DA in Gauteng says it will not form part of the Executive of the Gauteng Government of Provincial Unity. The party in the province says the offer made by the ANC is unfair and unreasonable. The DA says it will proudly fill the opposition benches in the Gauteng Legislature.
