African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula says that government must move with speed and decisive action regarding the spaza shop crisis.
Mbalula was speaking outside Tshwane House where he led the people’s walk and community march in Pretoria on Friday.
The march highlights community concerns, economic equity and improved service delivery.
Mbalula’s comments come as 12 children across the country have passed away allegedly after ingesting food items bought at their local spaza shops.
“Like now there is a crisis of spaza shops, can everyone feel that there is government in this country? Government that will be supported by our people. This morning President Cyril Ramaphosa said to me as I came to this march, we’re on track, we’re engaging NICD in terms of this poisonous thing that is eating up the communities but at the same time we’re regulating the environment to move like in the way we moved in terms of the COVID-19.â€

‘No forgotten communities’
Receiving the memorandum, Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya vows to serve all residents of Tshwane, stating that under her leadership there will not be any forgotten communities.
Moya says that her administration will do everything in its power to ensure that all those who live in Tshwane receive services.
“When the negotiations were happening SG, you asked us what we wanted to do with the City, we said we wanted to serve all the residents of the City of Tshwane. We do not want forgotten communities in this City. We come from Oliven where they are telling us we’ve never seen a mayor here for eight years. We went to Laudium and they say they haven’t had a mayor here for eight years.”
