Unemployment, water challenges, lack of decent housing, and crime are just some of the issues that were raised by residents of Umgababa, south of Durban. This forms part of the District Development Model Imbizo hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
District development models are the government’s medium to long-term frameworks for integrated development.
The President was accompanied by members of the cabinet and Provincial officials.
The residents called on government to act with speed in addressing their concerns.
The President’s District Development Imbizo is aimed at engaging with residents on issues affecting them. It’s envisaged that through this government will be able to respond effectively.
The residents of Umgababa, like the rest of the country, are faced with a plethora of challenges including severe water shortages, crime and unemployment, especially amongst the youth.

Aggrieved teachers also used the opportunity, to bring before the President’s attention critical issues affecting the education sector in KwaZulu-Natal.
For the past week, SADTU members have been protesting, amongst other issues, the delayed payment of the norms and standards that assist in the daily running of schools.
Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube reiterated her department’s commitment to resolving the challenges faced by learners and teachers in the province.
KZN has the highest number of learners in the country.
On water challenges, the government conceded that many areas are still experiencing water shortages.
President Ramaphosa also says the government was looking into incidents of food poisoning that have resulted in the deaths of children.
