The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has requested three of its members in the Mpumalanga Legislature to voluntary resign.
The party says the members of the legislature have brought the party into disrepute. The MK Party has nine seats in the Mpumalanga legislature.
Three members of the provincial legislature have been asked to vacate their posts in a letter seen by SABC News.
The party conducted an investigation into the challenges within MK MPLs. It says the members of the legislature brought the party into disrepute while the party admitted to internal disputes, it refused to state the reasons.
“Challenges in any party, they will be there. But these are the internal issues that need to be dealt with internally. So, now, as the provincial interim committee, all we did is to do the submissions to the highest command in terms of saying this is what we are having, please guide us. So, what we are expecting now is that the highest command will be giving us a guideline in terms of making sure that we work better and make the MK Party in this province to be a better liberation vehicle,” says Mpumalanga MK Party spokesperson Aubrey Mtsweni.
MK has nine seats in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature following the national and provincial elections in May. The party has attempted to make changes in the legislature before this.
“At most, the legislature representation is we are having seven members coming from Ngangla region we want to balance, three three, three from each region unfortunately the procedure of the IEC and legislature guideline could not allow us unless after 12 months,” Mtsweni adds.
A political analyst says the party has been marred with instability.
“This is tell tail signs that there’s some form of instability whether it is at provincial or national level, but itself the MK has start working on the mandate that people voted for. Now I doubt that there’s one individual that can leave the MK and render the MK bleeding with votes. Remember a lot of people that voted for the MK have never seen the constitution or interacted with manifesto in an in-depth, so a single individual can leave and I doubt it will destabilise them in its current form,” says political analyst Khanya Vilakazi.
The MPLs are given until the end of this week to resign or face formal removal. One of the affected members refused to comment.
