‘Zackie’ Abdurrazack Achmat is a South African activist and co-founder of the Treatment Action Campaign and is known worldwide for his activism on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS in the country.
At the age of 14 in 1976, Achmat joined the nationwide student revolt that began in Soweto, engaging in protests and class boycotts against the use of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in Black schools. During this time, along with countless others, he experienced the harsh realities of Apartheid policing firsthand, shaping his resolve for change.
According to his manifesto, Achmat stands and advocates for a competent, ethical, and accountable state. He stands firmly against poverty, corruption, and racism.
