{"id":964067,"date":"2024-07-03T07:44:20","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T07:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/dm-simulator-v2\/?p=964067"},"modified":"2024-07-03T07:44:20","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T07:44:20","slug":"citizens-found-guilty-of-tax-violation-could-face-criminal-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elections.sabc.co.za\/elections2024\/citizens-found-guilty-of-tax-violation-could-face-criminal-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Those found guilty of tax violation could face criminal charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Head of Strategic Engagement &amp; Compliance at Tax Consulting SA, Jashwin Baijoo, says South Africans who are not complying with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and tax laws may be found guilty of a criminal offence.<\/p>\n<p>This as SARS is intensifying its efforts to address tax non-compliance, in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/2024-tax-season-kicks-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filing season for the 2024 tax year<\/a> starts from July 15 until October 21.<\/p>\n<p>The Tax Administration Act of 2011 outlines various criminal offences related to tax non-payment and outstanding returns.<\/p>\n<p>Baijoo says it doesn&#8217;t matter who you are, if found guilty of tax offences you will face the consequences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Erroneous or incomplete or false submission of statements to SARS is a criminal offence. The non-submission of tax returns [and] not paying your taxes is a criminal offence and the list goes on.
