{"id":964257,"date":"2024-07-04T08:34:17","date_gmt":"2024-07-04T08:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/dm-simulator-v2\/?p=964257"},"modified":"2024-07-04T08:34:17","modified_gmt":"2024-07-04T08:34:17","slug":"nersa-allows-municipalities-to-increase-tariffs-pending-court-appeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elections.sabc.co.za\/elections2024\/nersa-allows-municipalities-to-increase-tariffs-pending-court-appeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Nersa allows municipalities to increase tariffs pending court appeal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has given municipalities the green light to continue with tariff increases pending the outcome of its appeal to the recent court ruling.<\/p>\n<p>The Gauteng High Court recently ruled in favour of AfriForum to prevent an increase in electricity tariffs due to outstanding documents.<\/p>\n<p>AfriForum says its court application is aimed at giving consumers a better understanding of what they are paying for when buying electricity and to ensure that municipalities are held accountable.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent ruling on the 12.7% tariff increase for the 2024\/25 financial year, the court found that Nersa&#8217;s consideration of the tariff increase applications without the necessary cost study was unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>Nersa had approved the tariff increase applications of 178 municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Nersa affirms its decision giving municipalities the go-ahead to increase tariffs while the appeal is being processed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PODCAST | AfriForum&#8217;s Morne Mostert&#8217;s full interview on SAfm First Take:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Gauteng High Court rules against electricity price increase\" src=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/first-take-sa\/gauteng-high-court-rules-against-electricity-price\/embed\" width=\"365%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"0\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Group Advisor at Ntiyiso Consulting, Miyelani Holeni, suggested that Nersa request a grace period for implementing the cost study while allowing tariff increases to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>Holeni stated, \u201cMunicipalities should commit to conducting a cost study but cannot delay necessary tariff increases to maintain service quality and meet financial obligations to Eskom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nersa in a statement, however, emphasised its commitment to reviewing regulatory tools considering changes in the electricity supply industry, legislative amendments, the unbundling of Eskom, and new energy investments.<\/p>\n<p>The new tariff increases took effect for over 60 municipalities on July 1, 2024.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Media Statement &#8211;
