{"id":965147,"date":"2024-07-10T15:30:58","date_gmt":"2024-07-10T15:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/dm-simulator-v2\/?p=965147"},"modified":"2024-07-10T15:30:58","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T15:30:58","slug":"mahlangu-seeks-legal-advice-following-life-esidimeni-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elections.sabc.co.za\/elections2024\/mahlangu-seeks-legal-advice-following-life-esidimeni-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"Mahlangu seeks legal advice following Life Esidimeni ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu says she is consulting her lawyers.\u00a0This after the Inquest into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/live-judge-mmonoa-teffo-delivers-judgment-in-life-esidimeni-inquest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life Esidimeni tragedy<\/a> found that she and former Gauteng Mental Health Head Dr Makgabo Manamela should be held responsible for the deaths of 144 mental healthcare users who died in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>After 8 years of denying any culpability in the deaths of the 144 Life Esidemeni patients, judge Mmonoa Teffo ruled on Wednesday that in some of the deaths both the former Gauteng health MEC and the Head of mental health were negligent.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 inquest was set up to determine the cause of the deaths.
