{"id":965347,"date":"2024-07-11T17:38:01","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T17:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/dm-simulator-v2\/?p=965347"},"modified":"2024-07-11T17:38:01","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T17:38:01","slug":"npa-committed-to-ensure-accountability-for-life-esidimeni-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elections.sabc.co.za\/elections2024\/npa-committed-to-ensure-accountability-for-life-esidimeni-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"NPA committed to ensure accountability for Life Esidimeni victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has taken note of the Life Esidimeni Inquest judgment delivered by the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The NPA vows to work with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to prioritize all outstanding investigations the matter.\u00a0The NPA says they are committed to ensuring accountability for any criminal conduct related to the tragedy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions says its taken note of the judgment of the Life Esidimeni Inquest handed down by the Pretoria High Court in relation to the death of over 140 patients.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MorningLive?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#MorningLive<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SABCNews?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#SABCNews<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SABCNews_MorningLive (@MorningLiveSABC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MorningLiveSABC\/status\/1811254551409770997?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July 11, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/families-of-life-esidimeni-victims-say-justice-has-been-served\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and former Gauteng Mental Health Head Dr. Makgabo Manamela were found liable for the deaths of 10 of the 144 patients who died<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana says the Director of Public Prosecutions in Pretoria will review the judgment to determine whether criminal charges will be instituted against the two individuals found liable by the court.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It should be also noted that the inquest doesn&#8217;t necessarily equate to a trial ready case as there may be additional criminal investigations that needs to be concluded.
