{"id":965484,"date":"2024-07-12T16:55:49","date_gmt":"2024-07-12T16:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/dm-simulator-v2\/?p=965484"},"modified":"2024-07-12T16:55:49","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T16:55:49","slug":"mogajane-denies-allegations-of-r1-million-vbs-bribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elections.sabc.co.za\/elections2024\/mogajane-denies-allegations-of-r1-million-vbs-bribe\/","title":{"rendered":"Mogajane denies allegations of R1 Million VBS bribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">Former National Treasury director-general Dondo Mogajane has re<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">jected<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\"> claims that he pocketed\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/npa-weighs-legal-action-over-leaked-vbs-affidavit-implicating-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R1 million bribe<\/a> linked to the<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0now defunct<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">VBS<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\"> Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">F<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">ormer\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">VBS<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">\u00a0Mutual Bank chair<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">person<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">Tshifhiwa<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">Matodzi<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">makes the\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">allegations in a lea<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">ke<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">d\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">263-page <\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">affidavit<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The alleged bribe was purportedly to facilitate the reversal of a National Treasury letter advising municipalities to divert their funds from VBS.<\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">Matodzi<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">\u00a0was sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison for his role in the\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">VBS<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0mutual bank\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">scandal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">Mogaja<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">n<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">e<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">\u00a0has\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">labeled<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\"> the allegations as baseless<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">.\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">&#8220;I categorically deny \u2013 I have never taken any money from anybody. I have served this country for 23 years. For the last 5 years, I was DG of National Treasury. My record is very clear in terms of how I rendered the dept and how I conducted business during my term as DG.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-gb\">&#8220;I have always been a proud public servant\u2026 all the affidavits and files any documents to do with VBS is with relevant authorities including a statement to the Hawks,&#8221; adds Mogaja<span xml_lang=\"en-us\">n<\/span>e.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The video below is reporting more on the story<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6G1viBrNOpY?si=f6X4CLEczpLMBvpv\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Serious allegations&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OUTA CEO Wayne Duvenage says the allegations contained in the affidavit are serious and may force those implicated to defend themselves. This may result in denials and counter-accusations.<\/p>\n<p>Duvenage says a court of law is the best place for these matters to be handled, further stressing that the law must not be selective in going after those who have been found guilty in the demise of the VBS Bank.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Will those who have been fingered need to, if they want to defend themselves, if they want to distance themselves from the record, will the NPA going to have to prove to the public that they were involved? That can only take place through a court of law and that&#8217;s the only process that we can trust. So there&#8217;re going to be a lot of allegations flying around as we say affidavits which are either leaked or not true.
