{"id":966476,"date":"2024-04-13T09:34:38","date_gmt":"2024-04-13T09:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/dm-simulator-v2\/?p=966476"},"modified":"2024-04-13T09:34:38","modified_gmt":"2024-04-13T09:34:38","slug":"iecs-decision-to-approach-concourt-regarding-mk-party-case-slammed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elections.sabc.co.za\/elections2024\/iecs-decision-to-approach-concourt-regarding-mk-party-case-slammed\/","title":{"rendered":"IEC\u2019s decision to approach ConCourt regarding MK party case slammed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"rt-reading-time\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\">&lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Executive Chairperson of the Institute of Election Management Services in Africa (IEMSA), Terry Tselane, has described as ill-advised and a display of panic the Independent Electoral Commission\u2019s (IEC) decision to approach the Constitutional Court on its case with the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/931833-2\/?hilite=MK+party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The commission is seeking leave to appeal the Electoral Court\u2019s ruling in favour of the party.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ruling which was delivered on Tuesday allows the party\u2019s leader Jacob Zuma to contest next month\u2019s elections after the commission disqualified him.<\/p>\n<p>Tselane says the commission appears to be misinterpreting the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>He says, \u201cSo the IEC is making an erroneous mistake in terms of this particular issue. They are not the people who objected. They have powers in terms of Section 30. The chief electoral officer can object to the candidacy of any person.
