{"id":967323,"date":"2024-05-27T09:20:51","date_gmt":"2024-05-27T09:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/dm-simulator-v2\/?p=967323"},"modified":"2024-05-27T09:20:51","modified_gmt":"2024-05-27T09:20:51","slug":"mondeor-voters-frustrated-at-delayed-opening-of-voting-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elections.sabc.co.za\/elections2024\/mondeor-voters-frustrated-at-delayed-opening-of-voting-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Mondeor voters frustrated at delayed opening of voting station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"rt-reading-time\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\">2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Discontent among senior citizens in <\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Mondeor<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">, south of Johannesburg, erupted this morning as they harshly criticised the Independent Electoral Commission (<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">IEC)<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\"> for the delayed opening of a voting station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Eligible voters who applied for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/special-voting-begins-marks-inclusion-of-independent-candidates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special votes<\/a> will cast their ballots today and tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">The delay was attributed to the late delivery of voting materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">The scene at the <\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Mondeor<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\"> Recreation Centre was marked by frustration and anger, despite the queue being relatively short. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">An hour after the station was scheduled to open at 09:00, no voting had taken place. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Harried officials attempted to placate the agitated voters, but their efforts were in vain. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">The situation highlighted a clear disconnect between the voters and <\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">IEC<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">\u00a0officials. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">The presiding officer at the voting<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\"> station explained that the voting materials had finally arrived and officials were in the process of preparing them for use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eastern Cape<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there are just over 288 000 special votes taking place in the Eastern Cape over the next two days.<\/p>\n<p>The IEC in the province has also stated that there has been an increase of 88 000 special votes compared to 2021.<\/p>\n<p>One of the areas where special votes are currently under way is the Wolfson Stadium in Gqeberha.<\/p>\n<p><strong>VIDEO | Voters slowly arriving to cast their special votes in Gqeberha:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mhn2ZbRr3ho?si=7Kba5FOIkQ1vKhrK\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">-Report by Clive <\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Govender<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reading Time: 2 minutes Discontent among senior citizens in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg, erupted this morning as they harshly criticised the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for the delayed opening of a voting station.
