{"id":967536,"date":"2024-05-30T10:52:49","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T10:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/dm-simulator-v2\/?p=967536"},"modified":"2024-05-30T10:52:49","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T10:52:49","slug":"parties-in-western-cape-keenly-tracking-election-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elections.sabc.co.za\/elections2024\/parties-in-western-cape-keenly-tracking-election-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Parties in Western Cape keenly tracking election results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"rt-reading-time\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\">2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Political parties in the Western Cape province say they are monitoring the election results that are currently trickling in with keen interest.<\/p>\n<p>Both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/da-will-retain-western-cape-majority-zille\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democratic Alliance<\/a> (DA) and the African national Congress (ANC) say they are less concerned about glitches in the IEC.<\/p>\n<p>The glitches saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/iec-commends-citizens-who-queued-for-longer-hours-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long voting queues<\/a> and subsequently a protracted counting process.<\/p>\n<p>The IEC\u00a0has subsequently said that a lot needs to be done to improve their internal systems.<\/p>\n<p>DA Premier Candidate in the Western Cape, Alan Winde says, \u201cThere were voting stations that were slick and working well but there were those that had long, long queues. I was in Parklands last night, out in Cloetesville out in parts of Stellenbosch, down in the Somerset, Gordon&#8217;s Bay region\u2026long, long queues. The weather started to turn; it got much colder, but people stood their ground. They stayed in the lines. I was there to encourage them&#8230;if they were going to stand there and vote, then I was going to stand in the cold with them but that was great for democracy. But the IEC must go back and have a look why this happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winde interacts with voters braving the cold and long queues:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Power cuts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Meanwhile, the IEC <\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">in the province has confirmed that<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0power cuts disrupted voting at\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">some of the stations, mainly in the Cape\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Winelands<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">Strong winds caused the power cuts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Electoral officer, Michael <\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Hendrickse<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">, says the staff were able to resume counting using\u00a0<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">recharg<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-us\">e<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\">able<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\"> lights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Look in the early hours of this morning there was a power outage in the Worcester, <span xml_lang=\"en-za\">Villiersdorp<\/span><span xml_lang=\"en-za\"> area it was apparently caused by high winds etc. That impacted on the 67 of our stations that were busy counting at that stage.
