The Barkly Pass on the R58 between Barkly East and Khowa remains closed to traffic as it is still covered in a thick blanket of snow.
Eastern Cape Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose says officers continue to monitor the situation at other high lying roads in the province.
Binqose says there are also vehicles stuck on the Barkly Pass and those will be rescued when conditions improve.
“Weather conditions all across the province more for a better reading today, as compared to yesterday. No more gusty winds and no more snowfall and all our mountain passes are open to traffic, except for one, Barkley Pass.”
“It has stopped snowing there but it remains bitterly cold with maximum temperatures still in the single digits. I think it’s a minimum of -5°C and maximum of 6°C. However, we believe the snow will melt away and that mountain pass will be open to traffic,” explains Binqose.
