The Democratic Alliance (DA) has lost its legal challenge against President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Sunday address to the nation (in his capacity as Head of State) on the 26th of May 2024 ahead of the hotly contested elections just a few days later on the 29th.
The Electoral Court dismissed the party’s application in a judgment today.
The DA hauled the President before the court in a hearing in July accusing President Ramaphosa of “abusing the highest office in the land for flagrant electioneering”.
The Electoral Court, however, in its judgment concluded that the President’s conduct did not compromise the freeness or fairness of the elections and that there was no evidence that the President’s address had any tangible impact on the elections.
